Situation

An emerging biopharma company was preparing to launch a novel interventional therapy for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) into a category with several established options. Traditional market research wasn’t enough. The client’s key question was the gap between how prescribers experience existing therapies in real-world practice and what the clinical data shows — and how that gap might shape adoption of their new asset. Answering it required a behavioral lens on what was driving and inhibiting prescriber confidence across the category.

Actions

Blue Matter deployed its proprietary AmplifyRx™ Behavioral Science Module, grounded in the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation), to establish a pre-launch behavioral baseline. Instead of relying on stated preferences, AmplifyRx mapped prescriber behavior across three interconnected dimensions: what providers know (Capability), what they think and feel (Motivation), and what their environment enables or constrains (Opportunity). Benchmarking the client’s pre-launch asset against established competitors on these dimensions isolated where real-world experience was reinforcing clinical data and where meaningful gaps persisted.

Results

The analysis found that a significant portion of prescribers of existing therapies did not associate those treatments with the real-world benefit their clinical profiles would suggest (an experience-confidence gap the client’s asset could target directly). For the client’s own product, Motivation metrics (outcome optimism, risk/benefit confidence) showed strong pre-launch signal, while Opportunity metrics (practice protocols, peer influence, resource support) lagged, not from resistance but because the product wasn’t yet available. That distinction let the client prioritize launch investments with precision: attacking the experience-confidence gap competitively while building the operational infrastructure needed to convert early prescriber optimism into sustained adoption.
